The Superclásico looks in bad shape both in planning and in form. Both teams are coming into the biggest game in Argentine football coming off of stunning losses that further their respective malaises.
River Plate’s 1-0 loss to All Boys meant it was the end of the Ángel Cappa era in Nunez. Cappa’s formula was not the answer to a team that shows very little offensively and has several doubts on defense.
Also add to that the fact that their relegation woes just got worse. With a 1.146 average, they are currently in a playoff spot. The news is only worse as a loss to Boca and a win by Gimnasia (1.135) would drop them even more.
Currently the top candidates for the job are Américo Gallego and Marcelo Bielsa. There is also talk that J.J. López and even Godoy Cruz coach Omar Asad take over for Cappa.
Boca Juniors also lost in embarrassing fashion as they hosted reigning champs Argentinos Juniors in what saw Claudio Borghi face the team he led to a title last semester.
Juan Román Riquelme also made his return to the pitch after a six-month absence. Claudio Genitiletti and
Estudiantes continued their road to the title as they defeated Lanús 3-0. Midfielder Michael Hoyos made history as he became the second American-born player to score a goal in the Argentine league. Up to that point, former Argentinos Juniors midfielder Renato Corsi had been the most recognizable name to have come from the United States. Corsi in his four years with El Bicho, he scored two goals.
