Former World Cup-winning coach César Luis Menotti was admitted to a Buenos Aires hospital on Saturday after he complained of having trouble breathing. Argentine press confirmed his admittance into the Hospital Italiano, they have also been told that he was in intensive care. It was later mentioned that the former coach was diagnosed with a chronic lung ailment that forced him to head to the hospital.
Menotti, 72, reshaped Argentine football at the national team level giving it the order and importance within that country’s landscape as a coach. His philosophy of work as well as his tactical theories help focus the game in a way that had not been focused before. The work he did when he first took over back after the 1974 World Cup disaster and helped pave the way for one of the most successful runs that the Albiceleste had winning the World Cup in 1978. Shortly after Menotti’s career as a player ended he led Huracan to their only league title in 1973.
He would also coach Barcelona after that leading the Blaugrana to the Spanish Supercup, Copa del Rey and the league cup in his lone season at Can Barca. He also coached the Mexican national team as well as Boca Juniors and River Plate on multiple occasions.
“Our football belongs to the working class and has the size, nobility and generosity to allow everyone to enjoy it as a spectacle.”- Cesar Luis Menotti on Argentine football
As player he had a successful career, although it wasn’t as illustrious as his time on the bench. His time as teams like Boca as well as Santos in Brazil alongside Pele were some of his highlights.
